A beloved holiday tradition is once again underway in Dakota County as Cardinal Christmas Baskets prepares for its 2025 food collection drive. Each year, this community-led effort provides families in need with a generous holiday meal box, reminding us that the season is at its best when neighbors care for one another.
This week, Mark Gehring and the Cardinal Christmas Baskets team shared details of this year’s drive with the South Sioux City Community Schools. Beginning Monday, November 24, schools across the district will collect non-perishable food items to help support the program. Collections will continue through Monday, December 15, with each building designating a space where students, families, and staff can drop off donations.
For decades, Cardinal Christmas Baskets has delivered holiday meals to approximately 300 families across Dakota County, providing comfort, dignity, and a moment of joy during a time that can be difficult for many. The continued success of the program relies on the generosity of the community — and every contribution, big or small, plays a meaningful role.
“Year after year, this effort reminds us of the power of community,” shared Mark. “It takes all of us — schools, families, volunteers, and caring neighbors — to make the holidays a little brighter for others.”
As the collection period begins, the Cardinal Christmas Baskets crew expresses gratitude in advance for the support, involvement, and kindness that fuel this tradition. Together, we can ensure that hundreds of local families experience a holiday season filled with hope.
