📚❤️ Happy Read Across America Day! ❤️📚

Today, across South Sioux City Community Schools, stories are being opened, imaginations are growing, and the love of reading is shining bright.

Reading isn’t just about words on a page, it’s about discovery.
It’s about connection.
It’s about building confident, curious Cardinals.

From our youngest learners to our high school readers, every page turned is a step toward opportunity. And thanks to our incredible teachers, staff, and families who nurture a love of literacy every single day, our students are learning that books can take them anywhere.

At SSC, we don’t just celebrate reading today, we live it all year long.

📚❤️ ¡Feliz Día de Read Across America! ❤️📚

📚⏰ Attendance Matters!
Every tardy, early check-out, and absence adds up.
Even 15–30 minutes a day can turn into days of lost learning over a year.

Every minute counts when it comes to reading on grade level and student success.
Thank you for partnering with us to help students arrive on time and stay all day—every day.❤️📖

The safety of our students and staff is one of the most important factors to a successful school district. South Sioux City Community Schools is committed to ensuring our schools are safe and our staff is prepared. To enhance this, in 2017, we moved to a Standard Response Protocol (SRP) called "I Love U Guys". We feel this protocol will give us the tools to be even more prepared for weather events, fires, accidents, intruders and other threats to student and staff safety.

The Standard Response Protocol is based not on individual scenarios but on consistent response to any given scenario. SRP demands a specific vocabulary but also allows for great flexibility. The premise is simple - there are five specific actions that can be performed during an incident.

• Secure is followed by the Directive: "Get Inside. Lock Outside Doors" and is the protocol used to safeguard students and staff within a building.

• Lockdown is followed by "Locks, Lights, Out of Sight" and is the protocol used to secure individual rooms and keep students quiet and in place.

• Evacuate is always followed by a location, and is used to move students and staff from one location to a different location in or out of the building.

• Shelter is always followed by a type and a method and is the protocol for group and self protection.

• Hold is a "hold" in the classrooms. Students and teachers are directed to stay in their rooms and clear the hallways. This is typically used for medical emergencies.

Throughout the school year, students will have the opportunity to participate in practice drills for each of the Standard Response Protocols. On Thursday, September 25th E.N. Swett students practiced evacuating the building. During an evacuation drill, students are provided the experience of going to our secondary site. Students did a wonderful job of following the protocol guided by our Building Safety Team.

Thank you for all your support and a wonderful start to the school year.

Mrs. Major and E.N. Swett Staff
