South Sioux City Community Schools is committed to providing learning opportunities that meet the individual needs and abilities of every student. Our High Ability Learner (HAL) Program supports students who demonstrate, or show the potential to demonstrate, high levels of academic achievement, intellectual or creative ability, artistic talent, or leadership capacity.

Through a variety of differentiated learning experiences, students identified for HAL services have opportunities to be challenged and supported throughout their educational experience. Services may include differentiated instruction, enrichment and extension activities, advanced coursework, acceleration, flexible grouping, project-based learning, independent study, career exploration, mentorship, and other opportunities based on student needs.

The district uses multiple data points when identifying students for HAL services, including assessment data, classroom performance, teacher observations, parent input, student work, and other evidence of student ability and potential. This approach is designed to provide multiple pathways for students to be considered and ensures that identification decisions are not based on a single test score.
